Kazakhstan - it's not really like Borat portrays it
I just got back from a few days in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Of course, while I was there I couldn't help but notice that the country's not really anything like it's portrayed by Sacha Baron-Cohen's character, Borat. Then I spoke to my parents and they mentioned an article about Borat in this week's JC:
The country may not be perfect, but it's clearly developing and has an influx of wealth. There are loads of new, expensive cars rather than rustbuckets pulled by horses. The university looked good and seems to be well funded. I suspect Borat will have lost his comic value in a few months. In a few years, though, I doubt he'd be able to use Kazakhstan in the way he has. No one would take him seriously.
